Simple games of skill originated in prehistoric times. These games were more than just an early form of entertainment or a fun diversion, they also taught people some basic coordination skills that were useful in hunting. Anthropological evidence shows that Native American cultures in particular had many games designed to strengthen a child’s abilities in throwing, running and aiming.
The original game of Ring Toss probably developed from the British game called Quoits. Records show that this game was played as early as the 14thCentury throughout Europe, eventually spreading to colonized areas. Players used quoits, or light metal rings, to hit iron “hobs” at a distance of 18 yards. The object of the game is much the same as Ring Toss—throw the rings and get them to land surrounding the upright posts.
The invention of the Giant Ring Toss game simply made posts and rings bigger, further enhancing the fun. Here’s what you need to know about how to play Giant Ring Toss—a simple backyard game that’s always a classic.

The Rules of Giant Ring Toss
Giant Ring Toss can be played indoors or out. Arrange two sets of stakes at least six feet apart and flip a coin to see which player or team goes first. Before rings are thrown, agree upon the winning score for the match—typically 50 or 100 points. The first player or team to hit the total wins!
How many players?
Giant Ring Toss is played with either two players or with four or more players split into two teams. Players and teams alternate turns, throwing one ring at a time until all rings are thrown.

Giant Ring Toss Scoring
While getting a “ringer” is the object of every toss, you can still rack up points if your rings land near the stakes. You get 5 points for every ringer and 3 points for rings that directly touch the stake. If you’ve managed to toss any rings within 6 inches of the stake—and closer than an opponent’s rings—you’ll earn 1 point for each.
Learning how to play Giant Ring Toss is pretty straightforward—it’s a game that can be enjoyed by players of all ages. Head to the backyard, set up your stakes and get tossing!
